Biochar developers, feedstock owners: data call opens today to unlock gigatonne-scale supply
One of the world's largest tech companies has commissioned Supercritical to run the call, which covers four feedstock categories and closes 7 August.
LONDON, July 28, 2026—Supercritical, the leading carbon removal marketplace, today opened an industry-wide data call for biochar developers, feedstock owners, and operators, covering four biomass categories that make up most of the sector's addressable feedstock base: large-scale forestry residues, nut and fruit shells, rice husk and straw, and sewage sludge. Responses close 7 August. The call feeds a research program commissioned by one of the world's largest technology companies to determine what biochar needs to reach gigatonne-scale carbon removal.
Biochar delivers more permanent carbon removal today than any other method. The ceiling on its growth is feedstock, not carbon science: whether biomass exists at volume, at a workable cost, and in the right places. The research treats those questions as the primary variable in biochar's scaling story and will conclude with recommendations on where capital, offtake support, research funding, and policy engagement can unlock supply.
"The biochar market doesn't have a science problem. It has a supply problem. The published literature only tells you about the projects that worked. Nobody has mapped where feedstock actually sits at volume, what it costs, and why projects stall, and that's the evidence a serious buyer needs before committing capital. This research builds it."
"These four categories behave completely differently across seasonality, geography, competing uses, and regulation. Each needs its own answer on quality, cost, and scale-up, and those answers sit with operators, not in the literature. That's why we're going to the market for them."
Project developers, feedstock owners and processors, including rice mills, sawmills, nut processors, and wastewater operators, and independent experts can contribute through a five-minute form covering operational challenges, scale-up plans, and pricing expectations. Responses are used in an aggregated or anonymized form, and Supercritical is shortlisting respondents for follow-up interviews.
The data call closes 7 August. Submit responses via this form.
