Boeing procures Supercritical carbon removal via six suppliers in four countries with one quality standard

Screened from over 200 global projects using Supercritical’s 118-point scientific framework

LONDON, April 29, 2026—Boeing has procured 20,000 tonnes of permanent carbon dioxide removal through Supercritical, advancing responsible growth and high-quality carbon removal credits in aerospace.

Boeing engaged with Supercritical to source a high-quality, diversified CDR portfolio, reviewing more than 200 projects worldwide, which were assessed against its 118-point scientific vetting framework for additionality, permanence, measurability, and operational readiness.

The portfolio came down to six suppliers across Brazil, Bolivia, Namibia, and India, spanning both biochar – a carbon rich material made from organic waste, and enhanced rock weathering – a process that accelerates natural rock weathering to permanently remove atmospheric carbon dioxide.

“We’re committed to supporting the responsible growth of our industry and high-integrity carbon removal is key to cutting net emissions as global air travel demand continues to rise. Our work with Supercritical supports that goal by expanding access to high-quality, diversified, science-vetted carbon removal credits.”

Allison Melia, Vice President of Global Enterprise Sustainability, Boeing

This procurement is based on choosing a clear set of quality standards, which align with Boeing taking steps toward scaling high-quality and diverse carbon removal technologies to support aviation industry emission goals. For example, Ground Up in India, is part of Boeing’s portfolio and was identified through Supercritical’s supply development, which typically focuses on co-designing for scale with early-stage developers. Ground Up is vetted against Supercritical’s 118-point quality framework. The portfolio contains supply Supercritical sourced from the existing market and supply identified through its development program.

“Most buyers still start from a shortlist of preferred suppliers. They look at what’s available and pick projects. The companies that are ahead of the curve are starting from criteria. They trust their procurement partner’s quality bar, and that partner goes and finds, or builds, the portfolio that clears it. That’s what we did for Boeing. We screened more than 200 projects against our vetting framework, and the portfolio we built is what passed. That’s the difference between a broker selling projects and a two-sided marketplace building market infrastructure.”

Michelle You, CEO of Supercritical

Supercritical continuously tracks more than 80% of the global industrial biochar supply, and 89% of the premium biochar available for delivery this year was already committed elsewhere. Market intelligence at that depth is what makes criteria-first procurement possible: you can’t screen the market against a quality standard if you can’t see the market.

The Boeing portfolio includes Exomad Green (Bolivia), the highest-volume carbon removal project globally by delivered tonnes, under a multi-year supply agreement with Supercritical; Ground Up (India), identified through Supercritical’s supply development program, converting smallholder crop residues into biochar; NetZero (Brazil), a circular biochar model returning biochar to farming communities; InPlanet (Brazil), which spreads crushed basalt across farmland to accelerate natural CO₂ capture through enhanced rock weathering; Varaha (India), also working with smallholder farmers on crop-residue biochar; and PlanBoo (Namibia), producing biochar from invasive bush species to restore degraded savannah.

Boeing will apply carbon removal credits to address its residual Scope 3 – category 6 emissions associated with business travel.

Supercritical is the carbon removal marketplace that helps corporate buyers design, source, and deliver durable CDR portfolios. The company sources and develops supply through exclusive partnerships and project development with early-stage producers. It provides scientific vetting and delivery risk management to corporate buyers running multi-year procurement programs. Supercritical has facilitated nearly 2 million tonnes of carbon removal for 200+ buyers and tracks more than 600 suppliers across 80% of the global durable CDR market. The company’s science team advises SBTi on CDR standards.
