First certified distributed biochar credits come to market through Supercritical-Varaha exclusive

New production tier certified under Isometric's Distributed Biochar Module gives buyers access to carbon removal with industrial-grade verification at a more accessible price point.

NEW YORK, 19 May 2026: Supercritical, the number one carbon removal marketplace, today announced an exclusive distribution agreement with Varaha, one of India's largest carbon project developers, for distributed biochar certified under Isometric's Distributed Biochar Module v1.1. The deal makes Supercritical the exclusive route to market for Varaha's credits, with 10,000 tonnes available in 2026.

Distributed biochar is an emerging third production tier in the carbon removal market. Until now, buyers chose between industrial biochar—high confidence, rigorous verification, constrained supply—and artisanal biochar, which offers lower costs and community co-benefits, where open-pit production methods have made enterprise-grade verification difficult to achieve. Distributed biochar bridges the two: enclosed, IoT-monitored kilns that bring industrial-grade verification to decentralized operations.

Varaha's operations in India convert Prosopis juliflora, an invasive species that degrades farmland, alongside agricultural residues, into biochar, returning revenue directly to farming communities under FPIC protections. Google and Microsoft are among Varaha's existing customers.

Isometric's module, which Supercritical's lead climate scientist Genevieve Hodgins contributed to during development, sets the certification standard for this new tier. The module requires enclosed kiln design, continuous IoT emissions monitoring, and standardized operating procedures, holding distributed projects to the same permanence and MRV bar as industrial biochar.

"The biochar category is maturing. For years, buyers chose between two production tiers. Now there are three, and the new one fills a gap the market has needed filled: verified carbon removal with real co-benefits at an accessible price. We have facilitated nearly 2 million tonnes of biochar and put every project through our 118-point vetting protocol. 88% fail. Varaha's distributed biochar passes. That is why we are backing them with committed capital and exclusive distribution."

Michelle You, CEO of Supercritical

"The core certification challenge for distributed biochar has always been emissions measurement. Our new module holds distributed projects to the same scientific bar as industrial biochar. For the first time, these projects can meet the quality standard that large corporate buyers are looking for."

Stacy Kauk, P.Eng., Chief Science Officer of Isometric

"India produces half a billion tonnes of agricultural biomass annually. Two hundred million tonnes of that is wasted. Distributed biochar turns that waste into verified carbon removal while returning revenue to farming communities. This partnership with Supercritical gives us a dedicated route to the enterprise buyers building long-term CDR portfolios."

Madhur Jain, CEO of Varaha

The deal is the latest in a series of exclusive supply partnerships that underpin Supercritical's supply development strategy, following a 500,000-tonne agreement with Exomad Green, a 1 million-tonne, 10-year Microsoft offtake with Liferaft, and GroundUp with Boeing.

Supercritical is the number one carbon removal marketplace. It builds the commercial architecture that turns carbon removal promises into delivered tonnes, sourcing, creating, and guaranteeing supply for 200+ corporate buyers through exclusive partnerships, three-layer delivery protection, and a science team that advises SBTi on CDR standards. Nearly 2M tonnes facilitated. 600+ suppliers tracked across 80% of the global durable carbon removal market.

Varaha is Asia's largest carbon removal developer, ranking 2nd globally for delivered durable CDR volume (cdr.fyi). Trusted by buyers like Google and Microsoft, Varaha is the only developer worldwide delivering credits across four distinct removal pathways: regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, biochar, and enhanced rock weathering. Backed by two years of continuous profitability and a network of 200,000+ smallholder farmers, Varaha provides the financial stability and execution certainty required to fulfill long-term corporate net-zero commitments. Varaha is headquartered in Gurugram, India, and operates over 20 carbon projects across India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the Ivory Coast.

Isometric is the certifier for carbon removal, superpollutant reduction, and environmental attribute certificates. Its Certify platform combines AI-powered verification with scientific rigour to unlock access to capital for project developers. Its Registry tracks every certificate from issuance to retirement with full transparency, enabling buyers to manage their net zero portfolios in one place. Isometric works with more than 150 project developers and has been selected to certify more than 10 million tonnes of carbon removal.
