Supercritical and Jain Irrigation sign deal for up to 19,000 tonnes of biochar credits
A $750 million listed agribusiness enters carbon removal as corporate buyers lock up high-quality biochar earlier each year
LONDON, 28 October 2026—Jain Irrigation Systems Limited (JISL), a publicly listed global agribusiness, and carbon removal marketplace Supercritical have signed a deal for biochar carbon removal credits from Jain’s operations in 2026 and 2027. The agreement covers up to 19,000 tonnes of durable carbon removal from Jain's industrial biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, which has been producing since early 2026.
Jain converts residues from its food processing lines and from agricultural crops into biochar via a gasification process that turns carbon into a stable form that stays locked in soil for centuries. Every output of the process is used within Jain's own operations. Syngas replaces fossil fuel at its industrial facilities, and the biochar goes into Jain's downstream agriculture businesses and back to farmers as a soil amendment. The project is undergoing verification through Puro.earth, with an independent BeZero Carbon rating underway.
“Most biochar projects we evaluate are building their supply chains from scratch. Jain has had theirs for 60 years. The facility is running, the feedstock comes from their own operations, and the farmer network already exists. That's the delivery profile our buyers look for, and it's hard to find when most of this year's high-quality supply is already spoken for.”
“Our reach across millions of farmers and our scale in irrigation and tissue culture give us a strong foundation for developing biochar at scale. We understand farming systems, we have decades of experience developing agricultural technology, and we already have established channels to work with growers. Biochar creates value from agricultural residues and connects our work in water management, planting material, manufacturing, and food processing with durable carbon removal. Our partnership with Supercritical helps us scale biochar deployment.”
The plant is built into an agricultural business that has worked with farmers since 1963 and has served more than 10 million farmers. Jain runs one of the world's largest mango processing operations and tissue culture nurseries, producing 150 million plants a year. Over the past 30 years, it has commercialized agricultural technologies ranging from micro-irrigation to banana tissue culture, and it plans to apply that research base and its farmer network to develop biochar products for agriculture at commercial scale.
The agreement adds 2026 volume to a tight market. Supercritical's H2 2026 biochar market report found that 81% of high-quality 2026 biochar supply was already committed by July, three months earlier than at the same point in 2025, as corporate buyers moved from one-off spot purchases to multi-year contracts.
